(What is Kyoto Oribekkō?) Oribekkō is a technical processing method with a three-layer structure: two clear acrylic sheets, and in between them, materials such as woven fabric or Japanese paper, along with acrylic resin encapsulated together with those materials. By intentionally encapsulating the material without stretching it taut, the uneven texture is expressed, allowing the charm of the woven fabric or Japanese paper to come through as it is. As a result, its appearance changes depending on how light hits it, which is a distinctive feature that lets you enjoy a variety of expressions.
〔About Nishijin-ori〕 It is a general term for luxury silk textiles woven in Kyoto’s “Nishijin” district, and does not refer to any specific fabric; the range of textiles produced is extremely wide. This production area has woven countless works known as masterpieces, has always led Japan’s shibori weaving techniques, and can be said to be unmatched in continuing to weave textiles for more than 1,000 years. Among textiles, the mainstream Nishijin technique is jacquard weaving, in which the yarn is dyed first to express the woven pattern. Compared with post-dyed textiles, in which plain fabric is dyed or printed afterward, jacquard pattern expression is characterized by deep, luxurious-looking expressiveness.
