(What Kyoto oribekkō is) Oribekkō is a technical process with a three-layer structure: two clear acrylic plates, and between them materials such as textiles or Japanese paper, plus acrylic resin sealed together with those materials. By intentionally sealing the material in a natural state without stretching it taut, irregularities are expressed and the appeal of the textile or Japanese paper comes through as it is. As a result, its appearance changes depending on how light hits it, allowing you to enjoy a variety of expressions.
〔About Nishijin-ori〕 It is a general term for high-quality silk textiles woven in Kyoto’s Nishijin area, and does not refer to a specific fabric; the kinds of textiles produced are extremely varied. This production area has woven numerous works called masterpieces, has continually led Japan’s weaving technology, and can be said to be unparalleled in having continued weaving for over 1,000 years. Among textiles, the main Nishijin technique is Jacquard weaving, in which the yarns are dyed first to create woven patterns. Compared with post-dyed textiles, such as plain fabric that is dyed or printed afterward, Jacquard pattern expression is characterized by a deeper, more luxurious feel.
