Rayon

Definition

Rayon is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from materials such as wood pulp, and is used in apparel and linings for its smooth feel, moisture absorption, and drape.

Definition and Overview

Rayon is a regenerated fiber made by dissolving cellulose found in wood pulp and other materials, then re-forming it into fibers. Because it has a silk-like luster and smoothness, it is widely used for woven fabrics, knit fabrics, linings, and garment materials.

Viscose is one of the representative manufacturing methods and names for rayon. In material labels and fabric distribution, it may be listed as rayon or as viscose, and the blend ratio and processing details are checked as well.

Features

Rayon absorbs moisture well and is a material that is easy to give a dry, smooth touch and supple drape that follows body movement. With filament yarn, it can express an elegant luster, and with spun yarn, it can create a soft, calm appearance.

On the other hand, it tends to lose strength when it contains moisture, so attention is needed for shrinkage, loss of shape, and wrinkling caused by friction and washing. In addition to being used on its own, it is also sometimes blended or union-woven with polyester, nylon, cotton, and other fibers to improve durability and ease of handling.

  • It tends to have a smooth texture and graceful drape.
  • It absorbs moisture and is also used for applications that require less stuffiness.
  • It can become delicate when wet, so checking the care label is important.

Main Applications

It is used for clothing that makes use of a soft texture and drape, such as blouses, shirts, dresses, skirts, pants, and cut-and-sew items. From lightweight to medium-weight fabrics, a wide range of expressions is possible depending on the weave, knit structure, and yarn usage.

It is also used for linings and accessories for women’s apparel, taking advantage of its good slip and pleasant feel against the skin. Fabrics with a cool feel are suitable for spring and summer garments, but they are also adopted in other seasons through blending with other fibers or through processing such as fuzzing.

Selection and Handling Notes

When selecting fabric, check not only the rayon blend ratio but also whether it is woven or knitted, the type of yarn, industry weight, structure, and finishing process. Even with the same rayon blend, a lightweight Georgette and a medium-weight twill differ greatly in sheerness, drape, and ease of sewing.

Before sewing, perform a test wash under the same conditions as the product and check shrinkage, color bleeding, wrinkling, and distortion. During cutting and sewing, the fabric may stretch or slip easily, so align the grain and, if necessary, consider interfacing and stabilization treatment for seam allowances.

Wash according to the product’s care instructions. Strong friction, long soaking, and heavy spin drying may damage the texture and dimensions, so avoid them, and after washing, the basic approach is to reshape the item and hang it to dry.

Differences from Similar Terms

Lyocell and modal are both regenerated fibers made from wood-derived cellulose, but their manufacturing methods and commonly seen properties differ from rayon. Do not judge performance by the material name alone; it is important to check the blend ratio, fabric specifications, and care label.

Cupro is also a type of regenerated cellulose fiber, and it differs from rayon in that it mainly uses raw materials derived from cotton linter. Polyester, on the other hand, is a synthetic fiber that includes petroleum-based materials, and its moisture absorption and behavior when wet differ from rayon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can rayon be washed at home?

Whether it can be washed depends on the fabric structure, blended fibers, dyeing and finishing, and product design. Rayon tends to become delicate when wet, so be sure to follow the care instructions. Before mass production, carry out a washing test on the finished product to check shrinkage and changes in texture.

Are rayon and viscose the same?

Viscose is a representative manufacturing method and name related to rayon. In distribution, viscose rayon is sometimes simply called viscose. However, material naming rules and care labeling may differ by sales region and product category, so check the labeling details.

What should be noted when sewing rayon fabric?

Lightweight rayon fabrics and fabrics with strong drape can shift easily during cutting and stretch easily during sewing. Before cutting, align the grain and check the conditions for needle, thread, and stitch with a test seam. If necessary, use interfacing and stretch-resistant tape to stabilize the seam allowances.
