Definition and Overview

Pattern repeat refers to the range over which the same design is repeated in prints, woven patterns, knit patterns, and similar designs. It is generally confirmed by the dimensions in the vertical direction of the pattern and across the fabric width, and is used for planning cutting and fabric consumption.

“Pattern advancement” is sometimes used to mean the interval until the pattern appears again, and “repeat size” often indicates the dimensions of one repeat unit. However, usage may differ depending on the workplace or trading partner.

Appearance and Design Impact

Patterns with a small repeat tend to create a uniform impression across the garment and are often seen in small florals and fine geometric designs. Large patterns have a strong presence for each motif, and the look of the product can change greatly depending on the cutting position.

Pattern repeat itself does not determine the fabric’s texture, strength, or absorbency. However, with woven patterns, structure and yarn usage, and with prints, differences in dyes or processing may change the surface feel and hand along with the pattern expression.

Main Applications

It is checked in products that use continuous patterns, such as all-over print shirts, blouses, dresses, skirts, pants, linings, and interior applications. In particular, large motifs, directional patterns, borders, and stripes are affected by the pattern placement of each part of the product.

It is not a season-specific specification, but repeat is important for all-over prints in lightweight clothing and for checks and woven patterns in autumn and winter clothing. Depending on the application, the relationship between pattern size and the dimensions of each product part is considered.

Selection and Handling Notes

When selecting fabric, confirm the vertical and horizontal repeat dimensions, pattern direction, and pattern position from the selvage with the actual material. For specifications that require matching the pattern on the front body, collar, pocket, facing, and similar parts, the required fabric consumption may be greater than for solid fabric.

Before sewing, straighten the grain and determine the reference point for the pattern before cutting. If a symmetrical appearance is required, arrange the left and right cutting parts so that they have the same pattern position. It is important to consider pattern matching with seam allowance included.

In fabrics that shrink, skew, or stretch due to washing, wetting, or heat treatment, the pattern position and spacing may change slightly after production. Check with testing or sewing samples before mass production, and adjust cutting conditions if necessary.

  • Confirm the fabric consumption and pattern position for large motifs in advance.
  • For patterns with an up and down direction, standardize the cutting direction.
  • For stripes and borders, confirm continuity at the seams.
  • Also specify whether pattern matching is needed for small parts such as pockets.

Differences from Similar Terms

Pattern repeat is a term that indicates the interval or one unit in which a pattern is repeated. In contrast, pattern matching refers to the sewing operation or specification of aligning the pattern positions of parts to be sewn so that they continue or are symmetrical.

Pattern width may refer to the width occupied by the pattern in lace or tape, whereas pattern repeat refers to the cycle until the same pattern appears again. Fabric width is the horizontal dimension of the entire fabric and is a separate specification from pattern repeat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fabric with a large pattern repeat require more fabric consumption?

For specifications that align pattern positions on the front and back body, left and right body, collar, pocket, and similar parts, extra fabric may be needed at cutting. The required amount varies depending on the pattern size, product dimensions, range of pattern matching, and cutting method, so check by marking on the actual fabric.

What is the difference between pattern repeat and pattern matching?

Pattern repeat is one unit or interval over which a pattern repeats, and is information about the fabric pattern. Pattern matching refers to the cutting and sewing operation or specification of aligning the pattern on both sides of a seam or on left and right parts based on that repeat.

Does washing change the pattern repeat?

If washing or drying causes the fabric to shrink, stretch, or skew, the actual measured interval of the pattern or the pattern position on the product may change. In particular, for materials that require wetting and fabrics with stretch, it is important to confirm the pattern position after pre-treatment.
