Definition and Overview

Waffle is a knit textile with a grid-like texture that resembles a confectionery waffle. The knitting structure that creates the recessed and raised areas gives it a sense of depth and a distinct look unlike plain jersey. It is not the name of a material, but mainly a term for the knit structure and appearance of the textile.

In apparel, it is sometimes called thermal. However, thermal often refers to textured knits intended for heat retention, so it is not always completely synonymous with waffle.

Features

The raised and recessed texture reduces the contact area against the skin, making it feel smooth and comfortable. It also traps air within the knit, so it generally provides a light sense of warmth and is used for layering from the changing seasons into cold weather.

The texture creates light and shadow, so it looks rich in character even in solid colors. On the other hand, thickness, stretch, warmth, and sheerness vary greatly depending on the yarn type, knit density, and the size of the texture.

  • Fabrics with fine texture tend to be relatively delicate and suitable for innerwear.
  • Fabrics with larger texture have more presence and are suited to cut-and-sew items and layered pieces.
  • They are made from a variety of fibers, including cotton, polyester, and wool.

Main Applications

Waffle is often used for long-sleeve T-shirts, cut-and-sew items, underwear, pajamas, and loungewear. Its soft knit structure fits the body well and can be used widely, from inner layers to single-layer outerwear.

Items made mainly from cotton may be chosen for a natural, casual impression, while blends with synthetic fibers may be selected for uses that consider quick drying and shape stability. Wool blends are used in products intended for warmth in fall and winter.

Selection and Care Notes

When selecting, check not only the composition but also the size of the texture, fabric weight, stretch in the crosswise and lengthwise directions, and sheerness. For innerwear, checking skin feel and stretch recovery, and for single-layer wear, checking thickness and resistance to distortion, helps match the intended use.

Because it is a knit, shrinkage, stretching, and skewing may occur during washing. In particular, knit fabrics made with spun yarn such as cotton should be prewashed or wash-tested before production, and shrinkage rates should be reflected in the pattern and specifications.

During cutting, be careful not to misalign the texture pattern or grain. During sewing, do not pull the fabric too much, and consider stitches and thread that can follow the stretch. If the seam ripples, adjust the feed, presser foot pressure, or use of interfacing.

Differences from Similar Terms

Jersey is a representative knit structure with a relatively flat surface, commonly used as basic T-shirt fabric. In contrast, waffle has clearly defined grid-like raised and recessed texture and a more three-dimensional appearance.

Pique knit also has texture, but its surface is characterized by a fine, pebbled or mesh-like appearance created by small stitches. Waffle is distinguished by its checkerboard-like grid pattern. French terry is a knit with loops on the back side, and its structure differs from the waffle texture on the front side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are waffle and thermal the same?

They are sometimes used with similar meanings, but they are not always the same. Waffle is a term for the appearance and structure of a knit with grid-like texture. Thermal is often used for fabric intended to provide warmth through an air-trapping textured structure, and the terminology varies by sales category and manufacturer.

Can waffle fabric be used in summer?

Yes. Waffle knitted thinly with fine yarn does not cling easily to the skin because of its texture, and it is also used for spring and summer cut-and-sew items and loungewear. However, thicker fabrics with a dense knit structure trap air more easily, so they may be suitable as warm materials for fall and winter.

Is waffle fabric hard to sew?

Because it has stretch and a textured surface, it requires more care than plain woven fabrics. Before cutting, align the grain and the texture pattern, and during sewing it is important not to pull the fabric. Use test stitching to check for seam rippling, skipped stitches, and seam shrinkage, then adjust the needle and feed conditions.
