Definition and Overview

Official moisture regain is a standard used to indicate the proportion of moisture contained in fibers relative to their dry mass. Because the moisture content of fibers changes according to ambient temperature and humidity, it is used to reduce condition differences in weight-based trade and quality control.

It is mainly a value used in trading raw fibers and yarn, and does not represent the actual moisture content currently contained in textiles or garments. Because it is defined for each material, caution is needed when simply comparing the figures for different fibers.

Characteristics and Relationship to Hand Feel

In general, fibers with a higher official moisture regain are associated with a greater tendency to retain moisture. This property may affect hygroscopicity, stuffiness while wearing, susceptibility to static electricity, and the feel against the skin.

However, official moisture regain is a standard value under specified conditions and is not a performance value that directly guarantees a product’s water absorption, quick-drying, or moisture release properties. The structure, density, finishing process, and blend ratio of the yarn or textile also affect the actual hand feel and wearing comfort.

Main Uses and Verification Situations

Official moisture regain is referenced when evaluating the mass of raw materials, yarn, and woven or knitted fabrics. It can be especially important for natural fibers and regenerated fibers that readily absorb moisture, because weight fluctuations due to storage conditions must be taken into account.

In apparel planning, it is checked as reference information to understand properties such as hygroscopicity when selecting materials. Its applications are not limited to summer items, underwear, shirts, knits, or autumn/winter items, but seasonal suitability should not be judged by official moisture regain alone; textile thickness and breathability should also be considered.

Handling and Terms Easily Confused

Textiles and yarn in storage may change in weight, width, length, and firmness due to humidity. Before cutting or sewing, if necessary, letting the material rest and straightening the grain can help confirm dimensions and hand feel in a condition close to the actual usage environment, which is useful for controlling shrinkage and seam misalignment.

Moisture content may refer to the proportion of actually measured moisture, and its meaning may differ from official moisture regain. In addition, shrinkage rate indicates the proportion of dimensional change due to washing or heat, and hygroscopicity is the property of absorbing water vapor; these are distinguished from official moisture regain itself.

  • After washing, shrinkage and shape changes should be checked using care labels and test results for each material.
  • For blended, union fabric, and interknit materials, the overall moisture behavior may differ from that of a single material.
  • Before mass production, confirm storage conditions and dimensional changes before and after sewing with prototypes.

Frequently Asked Questions

If official moisture regain is high, does that always mean less stuffiness?

Not necessarily. Official moisture regain is a standard for the moisture retained by fibers under specified conditions, and stuffiness inside clothing is also affected by the textile structure, thickness, breathability, finishing process, and garment ease. Make the judgment together with information on moisture release and wearing tests.

What is the difference between official moisture regain and shrinkage rate?

Official moisture regain is the standard moisture proportion relative to the dry mass of fibers. Shrinkage rate, on the other hand, indicates how much the dimensions of a textile or product change after washing, drying, heat, moisture, or similar factors. The shrinkage after washing cannot be directly predicted from official moisture regain.
