Definition and Overview

Hook and loop fastener is a fastening material made up of a hook side with fine hook-like pile on one side and a loop side with looped pile on the other side. When both sides are pressed together, the hooks catch the loops, and it opens by peeling them apart.

Structure and Differences from Zippers

A typical hook and loop fastener consists of the hook side, the loop side, the base fabric that supports each side, and edge parts for sewing. Depending on the application, there are also double-sided types with both hooks and loops on one side, and types with adhesive on the back.

Unlike coil zippers or metal zippers, hook and loop fasteners do not have teeth, sliders, top and bottom stops, or insertion pins and boxes. Instead of selecting opening and closing performance by tooth size or zipper length, specifications are considered based on the type of surface, width, overlap length, and holding power.

Types and Specifications

The hook side has strong holding power, but it is more likely to feel stiff or catch on things, while the loop side is softer and is often used on the garment side. Depending on pile length, density, base fabric thickness, and flexibility, the feel when fastening and unfastening, the strength of engagement, and the appearance will change.

Tape-like products are selected by width and the required length. When fastening the entire opening, set the overlap length while considering the area to be fastened, seam allowance, and finishing at the ends. Parts cut into round or square shapes are also used depending on the application.

  • For thin fabrics or areas that touch the skin, a soft loop side or a thin specification is considered.
  • Where heavy loads are applied, secure enough area by widening the width or increasing the overlap length.
  • Adhesive types are convenient for temporary fixing or non-sewn applications, but check compatibility with the material to be bonded in advance.

Main Applications

In clothing, it is used for front openings, cuffs, necklines, pocket openings, and waist adjustment sections. Compared with buttons or zippers, it is easier to operate with one hand and makes it easier to allow more freedom in the opening and closing position.

It is also used in sportswear, workwear, kids' wear, bags, shoes, care and medical products, and interior goods. In areas that are fastened and unfastened frequently, the balance between the required holding power and ease of use is important.

Selection and Handling Notes

In sewing, clearly specify the orientation of the hook side and loop side, the overlapping position, and interference with seam allowance in the specification sheet. If the tape end lifts up, it can easily cause peeling, so check whether the shape allows stable stitching all the way to the ends. When the fabric is thin, attention is also needed for seam puckering and waviness.

If the hook side is left open during washing, it may pick up fuzz and threads from other clothing, weakening the engagement. Before washing, in principle fasten it to the corresponding loop side, and remove any fuzz or foreign matter if it adheres. Suitability for high-temperature processing, washing, and dry cleaning should be checked for each product specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you measure the length of hook and loop fastener?

For tape-like hook and loop fasteners, the length is generally measured from one end of the tape used to the other end. When used for a garment opening, design it to include the extra allowance needed for seam allowance and finishing at the ends. The length of the actual overlap area that engages also affects holding power, so it must be checked separately.

Which side, the hook side or the loop side, should be placed on the outer side?

Generally, the softer loop side is placed on the side that is more likely to touch the skin or other clothing. However, priority is given to ensuring that the hook side is not exposed when worn and that the ends do not snag when closed. It is important to confirm this through prototypes, including the opening and closing direction and the sewing process.

What should you do if the hook and loop fastener stops adhering well?

If thread scraps, fuzz, or dust get packed into the hook side, it will not catch the loop side as well. Remove any attached material without damaging it, and check whether the hooks or loops are crushed, worn, or peeling. If performance has declined through repeated use, consider replacing it.
