Hello.
I’m Kimura from the ApparelX trend blog.
This time, we’d like to introduce the textile “peach skin,” which is drawing attention for its soft texture and elegant appearance!
What is peach skin?
As the name suggests, peach skin is so called because the surface of the textile has a texture with short, fine fibers, like peach skin.
Its fine brushed feel gives it a moist, supple look and a soft, smooth touch.
Light brushing on this surface is also called a “peach finish.” That is why many product names include “peach ○○.”
In the past, it was mainly made from synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon, but recently peach skin textiles made from cotton have also been increasing. When ease of everyday use and price are the priority, synthetic peach skin is often chosen, but when a natural texture is desired or a more luxurious look is needed, cotton peach skin may be selected.
Manufacturing process
Fiber selection
Synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon are used, and mixed with natural materials as needed.
Weaving
The textile is usually produced in plain weave or twill weave. This creates a base with both durability and softness. Brushing process
The woven textile is brushed with special machines. This process creates fine fuzz on the surface, resulting in a smooth, soft texture. Finishing
After brushing, the textile is finished, and coloring or water-repellent processing may also be applied.
Advantages
Soft touch
Its smooth, gentle feel, like the surface of a peach, is its biggest feature. Lightweight peach skin with a supple feel is also used for roomwear.
Luxurious texture
The fine brushed finish creates a matte, subdued luster. For synthetic fibers, it has a uniform and refined look; for cotton, it has a natural and warm feel.
Lightweight (for synthetic fibers)
When based on polyester or nylon, the textile itself is lightweight and easy to handle.
Durability
Peach skin based on synthetic fibers is durable and has the advantage of being less prone to wrinkling. On the other hand, cotton has moderate breathability and moisture absorption.
Disadvantages
Because it is a soft, lightweight textile, it may lack warmth retention in extremely cold environments. Since both synthetic fibers and cotton have limited cold-weather protection on their own, reinforcement with lining or quilt batting is needed.
Weight (cotton)
Cotton is slightly heavier than synthetic fibers. For items where lightweight performance is important, synthetic fibers are more suitable.
Cost difference
Cotton is often more expensive than synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers are relatively inexpensive and suitable for mass production, but they may feel insufficient to those who prefer the texture of natural materials.
