What is ventile, a material that is very popular overseas? Why is it expensive ② - Ventile fabric

Hello, this is Dong from ApaarelX.

Last year, after I was in charge of overseas orders, I realized that there is a textile that is attracting a lot of attention overseas.

Ventile waterproof textile .

Today I would like to introduce the origin of ventile and why it is attracting attention.

When it comes to waterproof textile, it is well known that GORE-TEX is very good.

However, before GORE-TEX became popular, there were a lot of older waterproof textile like Ventile.

In fact, when comparing waterproof functions, it does not have the same functionality as GORE-TEX, but there is a reason why it has survived without being culled from the market.

Having read reviews of Ventile from many veterans, I have great respect for this textile.

The principle behind Ventile being waterproof

I believe that the person who invented this is a textile expert who is familiar with the characteristics of fibers and how to weave textile.

Early Ventile textile are woven from 100% Egyptian long-staple cotton thread with a high count, low twist, and are extremely durable.

Only a small percentage of cotton can meet this stringent requirement.

It also uses 30% more thread than traditional textile . The waterproofing principle of Ventile is that when the air is dry, the gap between the warp and weft is approximately 10 microns, allowing breathability.

When the clothes get wet, the thread expand and the gap between the warp and weft shrinks to 3-4 microns, which can effectively prevent rainwater from penetrating continuously.

Contains historical significance

It's not just a piece of fabric; it has historical meaning.

Ventile began when Dalbot Weaving Co., Ltd. in Lancashire, England, developed it for military use.

Ventile is a high-density cotton textile that is woven by using ultra-fine cotton threads to increase the weaving density beyond the limit.

At that time, when a fighter plane was shot down over the ocean and the pilot fell into the sea, there was no waterproof or cold-proof textile, and it was extremely difficult for him to withstand the cold until he was rescued.

Therefore, Ventile, a cotton textile woven with strong hammering and high density, was born.

The densely woven Ventile repelled water and protected the pilot's life.

Even now, even though various high-performance materials have been developed, they are still used in military uniforms. It is a capable material.

Brands that often use Ventile

I believe that there are many brands that are impressed by the story behind this textile and continue to use it to this day.

For example, Nigel Cabourn's founder, Nigel Cabourn, prefers using Ventile textile.

He has used Ventile textile in both Converse collaborations and his own brands.

I'm sure he liked the texture and weight of this old cloth.

OS2300 Ventile 40/2 gabardine Slightly thick, firm and elastic material. It is characterized by its moderate luster and crisp texture.

OS2301 Ventile 60/2 gabardine It is thinner than OS2300, but the dense weave means it does not feel loose and has a solid feel. Like OS2300, the gloss is very beautiful.

OS2302 Ventile 40/2 Weather Cloth Compared to the two gabardine products above, it has a matte look. It has a moderate sheen, but it is a material that has a firm, firm and calm impression.

OS2303 Ventile 60/2 Weather Cloth It has a crisp and slightly thin textile, and although the surface of the textile has a slight shine, it has a matte feel. Compared to OS2302, it is smoother and has less unevenness on the surface, and is rather soft.
