There are many trends in the apparel industry, but recently, thanks in part to social media, small trends have been emerging one after another.
(Although I also feel that big trends across the industry are changing quite slowly, unexpectedly...)
Among them, the style I’m paying attention to is the Western style, which is starting to be called cowboy core.
This time, I’d like to introduce cowboy core!
As the name suggests, cowboy core is a style that incorporates items like those worn by cowboys and cowgirls.
That said, rather than an all-over Western look like a so-called cowboy outfit, the mainstream cowboy core approach is to add just one Western item,
or mix it with a luxurious style.
The style was popularized by American celebrities and musicians.
First, Pharrell Williams, who is also a musician and currently serves as Creative Director at Louis Vuitton, presented a style heavily incorporating cowboy and Western elements in the brand’s 2024-25 autumn/winter collection.
Global musician Beyoncé is also one of the people who helped push cowboy style forward.
She attended the Grammy Awards wearing a cowboy hat, and in March 2024 she released an album titled Cowboy Carter.
She is from Texas and has long been familiar with country music and cowboy culture, making her an icon of this style.
In addition, well-known models such as Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian, and Kendall Jenner have also been wearing cowboy-style items,
and it is becoming a major movement.
There are several Western items incorporated into cowboy core, and the cowboy hat is one of the most representative.
As mentioned above, both Pharrell Williams and Beyoncé appeared wearing cowboy hats at collections and parties.
It’s a bit of a tangent, but Pharrell Williams was also often seen wearing hats with long brims about ten years ago, and it felt like that style has returned in a more refined form.
Western boots are also an item that can be said to symbolize cowboys. Before this became a trend, they were not something that attracted much attention, but this boom has brought them back into the spotlight.
Western boots have been released not only by Pharrell Williams’s Louis Vuitton, but also by a wide range of brands such as Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and Ganni.
When you think of cowboys, leather jackets and pants are also representative items.
Cowboys of the time wore items made with genuine leather, but today, items made with synthetic leather and eco leather are also being adopted.
Denim items are also essential to Western style. Cowboys and cowgirls of the time wore denim as workwear.
Not only pants, but also denim jackets and denim shirts are central items in this trend.
Hats and boots may feel too obvious and therefore difficult to incorporate, but if it’s just one accent piece, this trend may be easier to try.
Various decorations can be seen in Western style, and fringe is a classic example.
Not only leather and denim, but items with fringe decoration on pieces that don’t look especially Western are likely to become popular in this trend.
