Hello everyone, it’s Jane again! In recent years, terms like sustainable and eco-friendly have become huge topics, and you hear them not only in the fashion industry but also in everyday life. But let’s talk about what sustainable actually means and how it affects our lives.

Sustainable comes from the English word “sustainable,” and means “able to continue” or “capable of being sustained.” Sustainable means that the environment of the planet and society is maintained for the future. The Japanese word “sustainable,” which is now used in Japanese, has come to be used not only to mean “not destroying the environment,” but in a variety of other senses as well.
The “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” adopted by all UN member states in 2015, outlines a framework plan for peace and prosperity for people and the planet from the present into the future.

We are determined to end poverty and hunger in all their forms and dimensions, and to ensure that all human beings can realize their potential in dignity and equality, and in a healthy environment.
We are determined to protect the planet from degradation through sustainable consumption and production, sustainable management of natural resources, and urgent action on climate change, so that it can meet the needs of present and future generations.
We are determined to ensure that all people can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives, and that economic, social, and technological progress takes place in harmony with nature.
We are determined to foster peaceful, just, and inclusive societies free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace, and no peace without sustainable development.
We are determined to mobilize the means needed to implement the 2030 Agenda through a revitalized global partnership for sustainable development, based on a spirit of enhanced global solidarity, with a focus on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable, and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders, and all people.

The 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are called the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). To think more deeply about sustainability, let’s look at what the goals of a sustainable lifestyle are.
