What are bio-based materials attracting attention in the apparel industry? We explain the raw materials, characteristics, and sustainable reasons behind bio-based materials!

Hello! This is Kimura from the ApparelX Sustainable Team.

The term "bio-something" has become increasingly common recently, with terms like "bio-nylon," "bio- polyester," and "bio-urea."

While it gives the impression of being environmentally friendly, many people probably wonder, "What exactly are bio-based materials made from?" This time, as a first step in understanding sustainable materials, we will clearly explain what "bio" actually is.

What is "bio"?

In the materials field, "bio" refers to the use of biomass, which is a raw material derived from living organisms. Until now, many materials have relied on petroleum-derived raw materials, but bio-materials replace some or all of them with renewable, bio-derived raw materials.

What is biomass?

It refers to the quantity (mass) of biological resources (bio), and generally is a general term for "organic matter of plant and animal origin that can be used as an energy source."

Main raw materials for bio-based materials
The raw materials for materials called "bio-something" are mainly the following:
corn
·sugar cane
• Wood (cellulose)
・Root vegetables such as cassava
・Vegetable oil
• Components obtained through microbial fermentation
These are renewable resources that are unlikely to be depleted, and they form the basis for sustainable material development.

Why are bio-based raw materials attracting attention?

The underlying reason is the growing awareness of environmental issues.

- Breaking away from dependence on oil
Petroleum is a finite resource. By using bio-based raw materials, we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

• The concept of carbon neutrality
Plants absorb CO₂ during their growth process. By using plant-derived raw materials, it is believed that CO₂ emissions can be reduced throughout the entire lifecycle of the material.

"Bio" does not mean "returning to nature."

This is a point that is easily misunderstood. Bio-materials simply mean that they " use raw materials derived from living organisms," and they are not necessarily biodegradable.

Even in the biotechnology field, there are materials that do not decompose.
• In many cases, the bio-based ratio is only partial.
Many designs prioritize performance and durability.
Therefore, recently, specific labeling such as "bio-derived" or "biomass ◯%" has become important.

Examples of "bio-something" used in apparel

In the fields of fashion and accessories, the following materials are used:
• polyester: polyester that uses some plant-derived raw materials.
• Bio-nylon: Utilizes plant-derived raw materials such as castor oil.
• Bio-urea: Urea resin made from bio-derived raw materials
All of these aim to "maintain the functionality of conventional materials while reducing environmental impact."

Key points when choosing sustainable materials

It's recommended to check the following points rather than judging solely on the word "bio."
What is the origin of the raw materials?
What is the proportion of biotechnology?
• Is it biodegradable? Does it suit the intended use and durability?

By understanding it correctly, you can make choices that effectively communicate sustainable practices.

Here are some of the bio-related products featured on ApparelX!

PRV-48 Bio Yuria 4-hole button

These buttons are made from sugarcane pulp.

summary

So, what did you think? The "bio" in "bio-something" means that it uses raw materials derived from living organisms. It's a practical approach to reduce dependence on petroleum and lower the environmental impact.

Understanding the background and meaning behind materials can make sustainability feel more accessible and relatable.

In addition to the products introduced here, we also offer a range of other biomass products, so please check them out here if you are interested.
