21AW Introduction to ribbons and webbing from SHINDO, a major ribbon manufacturer

Today, ApparelX Global introduces SHINDO, a major Japanese ribbon company. (In Japanese, a “major company” means a large company with a certain level of recognition and scale.)

In Tokyo in October, there is already a hint of winter in the air, and winter clothing is selling strongly in the online and physical stores of major brands.

As an essential trim for winter wear, I would like to introduce SHINDO’s autumn/winter ribbon series.

SHINDO’s products are recommended not only this year, but also for next autumn and winter. Let’s take a look at SHINDO’s products together~

REF-8600 single-sided velvet ribbon

This single-sided velvet ribbon comes in rich, vivid colors, making it ideal for autumn and winter color coordination. The pile is slightly longer, and the surface is soft and smooth.

Sizes range from 6 mm to 48 mm, so it can be used for a variety of purposes, from small accessories to dresses.

SIC-EB013 elastic tape

This series of tape comes in 75 colors, has a very soft texture, is stretchy, and has a slightly shorter pile. You should be able to find a color that matches your fabric. The SIC-EB012 ribbon in the same series is non-stretch.

SIC-108 single-sided velveteen ribbon SIC-109 double-sided velveteen ribbon

SIC-108 single-sided velveteen ribbon comes in 32 colors, and SIC-109 double-sided velveteen ribbon comes in 20 colors. The pile is slightly shorter than velvet tape. Depending on the angle of the light, the sheen and color appear different, giving it a premium feel.

SIC-176 premium-texture double-sided ribbon

The surface has a brushed finish with a peach-skin texture. It also has a leather-like look, and the texture is perfect for autumn and winter. Colors include dark Bordeaux, smoky pink, earth tones, and other fashionable shades.

SIC-289 wood-grain herringbone wool tape

100% wool ribbon with the warm texture and smooth feel unique to wool. The soft colors created by the wood-grain tone pair perfectly with knit fabrics.

What is the difference between velvet and velveteen?

Pile

Velveteen is generally woven as two layers of fabric together, using two warps and two wefts. During weaving, after every four pile yarns are woven in, a pile rod (thin wire) is inserted. When a certain length is reached (about 20 cm), the fabric is slit along the wire with a cutting blade on the loom, and the pile rod is removed from the fabric, forming the pile. Simply put, in velveteen fabrics, the warp or weft is not flat but raised to form a pile. The pile is generally formed from loops (for example, if the warp between two wefts is not pulled straight but instead arches upward, it forms a loop). These loops are often cut, creating two cut pile ends (a very easy-to-understand explanation, based on a Guokr Q&A).

Velvet

Velvet is a traditional autumn/winter fashion fabric. It is a type of pile fabric, also called warp-pile velveteen. As the name suggests, it uses warp yarn to create the pile; after the warp pile is cut, it becomes two smooth single-layer warp-pile fabrics.

Originally, velvet was mainly made from silk and was used by royalty in ancient China. It was especially popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, velvet products made from materials such as rayon are also very popular.

Velveteen

This is a weft-pile fabric, woven from one set of warp yarns and two sets of weft yarns (ground weft and pile weft), similar to corduroy. The ground weave is often plain weave, though twill is also used. Weft velveteen is mainly used for apparel and decoration. In Japanese, weft velveteen is called “bechen,” expressing the idea that its texture is especially rare and precious. Because weft velveteen was originally often made from cotton, it is also called cotton velveteen. Today, many weft velveteen fabrics are made from synthetic fibers.
