What is SDG single yarn?

Sustainable Development Goals is abbreviated as SDGs, which is what we usually call the Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 goals in total, namely:

SDG Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere. (No poverty)

SDG Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. (Zero Hunger)

SDG Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. (Good Health and Wellbeing)

SDG Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. (Quality Education)

SDG Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. (Gender Equality)

SDG Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation for all is an important part of the world we hope to live in. (Clean Water and Sanitation)

SDG Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. (Affordable and Clean Energy)

SDG Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. (Decent Work and Economic Growth)

SDG Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure)

SDG Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries. (Reduced Inequalities)

SDG Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. (Sustainable cities and communities)

SDG Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. (Sustainable Consumption and Production)

SDG Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. (Climate Action)

SDG Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans and marine resources for sustainable development. (Life Under Water)

SDG Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss. (Life on Land)

SDG Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. (Institutions, good governance)

SDG Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. (Partnerships for the goals)

Sustainable development won't be left out of fashion

Looking at the 17 goals above, all of them are directly or indirectly related to our industry. In recent years, environmentally friendly fabrics and trims have also attracted a lot of attention. From my own work experience, whether it is fabrics and trims made from recycled fibers, or materials that are biodegradable after disposal and harmless to the environment, every manufacturer is working on them, and apparel brands are actively adopting these materials as well.

Today I’d like to share some common sustainable terms related to fabrics, which I hope will be helpful. (I saw these in the WWD newspaper, hehe)

&+

A recycled fiber brand launched by Toray in 2019 using discarded plastic bottles as raw material.

Anyone who has seen recycled-fiber raw material knows that it comes as tiny granules; the whiter the color, the better the quality, which means there are no impurities inside. Toray used its patented impurity-removal and washing technologies to create this fiber.

(Will be deleted if infringing)

BEMBERG

Known domestically as Bemba, Bemberg is famous for being made from cotton linter and for its anti-static, non-sticky feel. It is a brand of cuprammonium rayon, a cellulose fiber produced by Asahi KASEI.

ApparelX also carries many Bemberg fabrics, so please search by keyword if you are interested.

BRING

A clothing recycling project initiated by Japan Environmental Design. Based on the concept of "making clothing from clothing," discarded garments are collected and sorted, and used polyester clothing and fabric scraps left over from factory production are processed into recycled polyester raw material.

This kind of recycling of clothing into clothing is currently being done in Japan only by Japan Environmental Design, with strong support from MUJI, Aeon Mall, Wacoal, and others.

CASTLON

UNITIKA is accelerating the development of the market for plant-based polyamide 11 fiber. The company has been developing applications in the sportswear field for some time, but it will now expand its applications to non-apparel fields such as bags, shoes, filters, and materials for cold climates, taking advantage of its light weight, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and excellent low-temperature properties. "CASTLON" is a polyamide 11 fiber made from castor beans. It is light, with a specific gravity of 1.03 g per cubic centimeter, and its yarn quality characteristics are almost the same as polyester. It can be dyed and has high colorfastness to washing, perspiration, and rubbing.

ECONYL

ECONYL® was developed by Italian yarn manufacturer Aquafil. ECONYL® is made from plastic waste from landfills and discarded fishing nets, as well as ocean plastic, which has become a problem. Aquafil's unique manufacturing process keeps the recycled nylon fiber at the same quality as virgin nylon, allowing it to be roll recycled and reused, with endless possibilities.

ECOPET

ECOPET® is made from waste plastic bottles, clothing, and fiber waste. Teijin then uses various technologies to turn these materials into something useful.

That’s all for today’s introduction for now. In the next article, I’ll introduce more content for everyone.
